1. Commit to a daily oral health routine.

Discuss with your dentist or staff at Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers about an effective oral health routine that fits your needs. For instance, if you are taking medication that dries your mouth, you may consider using fluoride rinse or fluoride toothpaste. People with medical condition such as diabetes or pregnant women and people in orthodontic treatment also may need special care.

2. Brush and floss to remove plaque.

Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers strongly believe that everyone should brush three times a day or after every meal. In addition, you should floss at least twice a day to remove plaque, which is soft, sticky, and colorless deposit that is continually forming on our teeth and gums. If plaque isn’t removed daily, it can process sugars found in most foods and drinks to form acids that lead to decay. Bacterial plaque also causes gingivitis or gum disease. It’s important to brush and floss correctly and thoroughly to prevent the cavities and periodontal diseases.

3. Use fluoride.

People of all age groups can benefit from fluoride. Fluoride strengthens and helps prevent decay. Toothpastes and mouthwashes are good sources of fluoride. Contact Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers or your dentist for prescription for stronger concentrations of fluoride through gels, oral rinse or pills if you need it.

4. Understand your own oral health needs.

Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers believe that your oral health depends on many factors, including your diet, the type and amount of saliva produced in your mouth, habits and your oral hygiene routine.

Changes in your oral health often result from your overall health condition. For example, many drugs can reduce the amount of saliva in your mouth, resulting in dry mouth. These medications can make your saliva thicker in consistency. Women who are pregnant often experience oral changes including inflammation of the gums. Patients with asthma get dry mouth, gingivitis from breathing through their mouths especially when sleeping. For free dental consultation appointment, call our office at (408) 259-2900.

5. Examine your mouth regularly.

It is important to examine your teeth regularly to look for any changes that might be of concern. These changes include sores on your gums, cheeks or tongue, discolored teeth, or bleeding or swollen gums. A regular check up is especially important if you are a tobacco user, who is at risk of developing oral cancer. Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers provide oral cancer screening during a regular check up. If you want to know more about oral cancer screening, call our office at (408) 259-2900 to schedule an appointment.

6. Limit snacks, particularly those high in simple sugars, and eat a balanced diet.

Every time you eat, the food particles get stuck in and around your teeth making a great fuel for the bacteria. Every time you eat, the bacteria break down sugars and produce acids that begin the decay process of the teeth. Each time you eat food containing sugars or starches, your teeth are exposed to bacterial acids for 20 minutes or more. These repeated acid attacks can break down the enamel surface of your teeth, leading to a cavity. If you must snack, brush your teeth afterward.

Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers strongly believe in the importance of a balanced diet. Deficiencies in minerals and vitamins can also affect your oral health, as well as your general health.

7. If you use tobacco in any form, quit.

Smoking increases your risk of oral cancer, gum disease and tooth decay. It also contributes to bad breath and stains on your teeth. Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers strongly suggest that tobacco users to have a regular check up at least once every 6 months to prevent from irreversible gum disease or oral cancer.

8. Visit the dental office regularly.

Going to the dentist for routine check ups and cleanings is one of the most important factors in maintaining good oral health. Regular dental check ups can prevent cavities, gum disease, oral cancer and other dental problems. Prevention is better than cure and rather than waiting for a problem to develop, it is always better to visit a dentist for regular check-ups. .
